SINCE 1888

The History of University Heights, San Diego

  1. 1888

University Heights is founded during the 1880s land boom. The name comes from a plan to build a branch of the University of Southern California here, which never happened, and it gave University Avenue its name too.

  2. Early 1900s

Streetcars connect the neighborhood to the city, and the trolley barn on Adams Avenue becomes a fixture until the cars are retired in 1939. The site is now Old Trolley Barn Park.

  3. 1920s

Spanish Colonial Revival bungalows go up on Shirley Ann Place, which the City of San Diego later designated a historic district.

  4. 1997

The Park Boulevard neon sign, designed by Kevin Whaley, is lit for the first time on April 3.
